Bathroom Plumbing

Bathrooms often contain the largest number of plumbing fixtures and drain of any room in your home. Each of these fixtures and drains is connected to a main water supply line and a drain, waste, and vent system. This terminology can be confusing at first, but a basic knowledge of bathroom plumbing is easy to obtain and can prove invaluable for a homeowner.

The Home’s Water Supply

Your water supply comes into your bathroom from a private well or a pipe connected to a city’s water main. In most homes, the main water supply line is located in the basement or crawlspace. Your water meter is usually the dividing point between your plumbing lines and the mainline owned by your municipality. These systems use a 1/2-inch or larger copper pipe that enters through your basement wall. The tubes are connected to a shutoff valve located near where they join your home so you can shut off the water supply to your entire house if necessary. Your bathroom’s water supply pipes will branch off the mainline into two lines after it enters your home. The cold water pipes run directly to your bathroom fixtures and faucets, while the hot water runs to the water heater. It is then piped back alongside the cold water lines to the bathroom.

Drains and Vents

The drain, waste, and vent system takes water away from the fixtures and out of the house. Your bathroom vent system supplies air to the drain system to make sure waste moves out of your bathroom plumbing lines. This system typically consists of rigid plastic PVC or ABS pipes connected from your plumbing to a soil stack, a vertical stack of pipes that begins in the basement, where it’s connected to the outgoing sewer line. The top end of the stack usually runs up through the roof, where it allows gases to escape outside and promotes drain flow by drawing fresh air inside. Every bathroom fixture must connect to one of your home’s central vents. It’s usually best to have a licensed professional plumber inspect, repair, or install anything relating to the vent system.

Clearing Clogs

Each drain in your bathroom carries wastewater away from the fixtures, but sometimes these drains get clogged. You can use a plunger to remove a sink and toilet clogs, but make sure you have the right plunger. A toilet plunger has a neck protruding from the end, while plungers with a flat cup are designed to clear sink clogs. Sometimes sink clogs can only be removed by disconnecting the P-trap, which is the curved section of pipe beneath the sink, and cleaning the material from the drain. Stubborn toilet clogs can also be cleared with a plumbing auger, which uses a cable to reach into the toilet drain and break up the clog. If plunging or snaking doesn’t clear a clog, contact a plumber to inspect the drain and vent system.
